An extensive survey of biological principles from a biochemical and evolutionary viewpoint. Plant and animal groups are studied for a general knowledge. Varied life forms and topics such as cellular biology, genetics, metabolism, reproduction and responsiveness are stressed.

The structure and function of the human body, characteristics of cells, tissues, organs and systems. Laboratory experiments using selected vertebrates illustrate basic concepts.

CHM 105 and Bio 105/106 or Bio 110/111 are prerequisite for this course.

Form, structure, metabolism, identification and reproduction physiology of micro-organisms. General and medical microbiology; characteristics of bacteria, molds and viruses; cultivation, identification, sterilization, dis-infection, aseptic techniques and the microbiology of water, sewage and air.

Principles of Genetics [Lecture]

 

3 lecture hours  *  3 credits

An introductory course which provides an understanding of the principles of human inheritance and the effect of environmental factors.  Topics will include human diversity, evolution, application of gene transmission, and cloning; gene counseling and screening; mapping an organism’s genes and social aspects of genetics.

CHM 105

Principles of General and Biological Chemistry

3 lecture hours  *  3 credits

For students in the health-related profession.

The fundamentals of modern chemistry with emphasis on biochemistry. The topics covered include atomic structure, chemical bonding, chemical reactions, acids and basis, organic chemistry, carbohydrates, lipids, protein, nucleic acids, vitamins, minerals and their biochemical applications in health and disease.
